Our Training Program

«We believe that helping young people to help themselves is the best form of support.»

Our training program is based on the Swiss apprenticeship system, a dual model with on-the-job practical training supplemented by theoretical classes, that we have adapted to the needs in Cambodia. The training program is free of charge for the trainees. The costs of running the program is subsidised through the restaurants income and donations through DRAGONFLY – the Swiss association behind HAVEN.

In addition to the training it is also part of our concept to provide a safe space for our trainees, hence the name HAVEN. We provide our trainees with guided shared housing and cover their entire expenses during their training year, such as food, medical care, bicycles, clothing etc. Additionally they are paid a monthly trainee allowance, serving as their personal pocket money. And with our HAVEN Family concept, we are able to provide individual support and mentoring to promote the personal and professional development of each trainee.

The training year in a nutshell

Every summer, we take on new trainees who want to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. They come to us from shelters and poor rural areas and are determined to build a better life for themselves.

12 months of intensive training:
At HAVEN, trainees receive sound, hands-on vocational training that teaches practical skills in combination with the theoretical knowledge. The curriculum is completed with workshops on life skills and soft skills and with English lessons.

Graduation and external internship:
After successfully completing their training, graduates complete a four-month internship at renowned partner hotels in Siem Reap. This internship serves to deepen the knowledge learnt, to adapt to new working environments, to learn new work processes and to integrate into professional teams. During this time, they continue to live in our trainee accommodation and receive comprehensive care and support from us.

Support with entering the labour market:
After completing the internship, we actively support our graduates in the transition to a permanent position. We are proud of our 100% placement rate.

«Our aim is to support disadvantaged young people in their emotional and professional development and give them a real chance in life.»
